Play Mithyasur

Staged in Delhi during Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards 2026, Mithyasur is a compelling stage production that delves into faith, doubt, and illusion through a layered and engaging narrative, says Zikra

The play Mithyasur, shortlisted for the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), written by Pranay Pandey, and directed by Ajeet Singh Pallawat, was performed at Sri Ram Centre. What happens when faith begins to crack under the weight of reason? This drama, set in the 18th century, explores this very conflict through a gripping and thought-provoking narrative. The title itself Mithya meaning illusion and sur meaning a creature, hints at the central theme of deceptive beliefs and blind devotion.

The story revolves around Somdev, a devoted follower of the demon king Kumb, whose sudden absence from his dreams leaves him anxious and unsettled. Convinced that he has somehow displeased his lord, Somdev spirals into confusion and fear. His internal conflict deepens with the arrival of Rajkumari Revati, whose rational outlook challenges his long-held beliefs. Through her, Somdev is forced to confront the possibility that his faith may not be as absolute as he once thought. Parallel to this, we are also introduced to Kumb, who repeatedly mocks his believer. Why did Kumb stop appearing in Somdev’s dreams? Who really is Kumb? The play gradually answers all these questions.

Bringing anger to the stage is manageable, and conflict isn’t very difficult either, but humour? That’s no walk in the park. This play nailed it. Despite its serious storyline, the audience remained hooked due to the humor reflected in the dialogues and body movements. The direction was remarkable, justifying the many awards the drama has secured. The actors made it feel as though they truly embodied their characters. Vijay Patidar as Somdev left the audience speechless with his portrayal of deep devotion and emotion. Sahil Ahuja as Kumb balanced humour and message effectively. Pratiksha Kote as Rajkumari Revati graced the stage with charm and rationality, delivering a truly brilliant performance.

There’s no drama without its ambience, and Mithyasur delivers this brilliantly. The stage set-up was absolutely mesmerising. The giant leg of Kumb hanging from the top made the view incredible. The captivating use of lights and smoke stimulated the audience in the best way, adding depth to the overall experience. However, the timing of the lights could use some work; at certain instances, it became confusing as to whom the audience should focus on. Other than that, the stage setup was impeccable. The life-sized Granth placed just below the leg proved to be a significant addition, enhancing the impact of the performance. The live music made each moment echo with meaning and importance, hence adding to its grandeur.

Summing up, Mithyasur follows a thought-provoking storyline, and delivers the same with just the right amount of humor and intensity. The stage set-up was picturesque and the music gripping. The lights danced on the stage, sometimes making it confusing but still managing to hold the look of the stage just right. The drama does total justice to its title. Brilliant work by all those behind this. A weekend-worthy watch for those who enjoy reflecting on a performance even after it ends.
