Yes, we all flaunted pictures and short videos of AR Rahman from his Delhi show, but the fact of the matter is that most of his fans were let down by his average performance

AR Rahman’s performance had become the talking point last weekend in the Capital. When a musical tour reached Delhi, thousands of fans flocked the Dwarka venue in a bid to watch the iconic musician performing live. The Oscar-winning music director, however, left fans asking for more even after his hour-long performance.

Most fans were disappointed to see Rahman making way at the centrestage for unknown younger vocalists and not taking to singing himself. Many in the crowd were screaming and requesting Rahman to sing their favourites. Surprisingly, the selection of songs was also criticised by some. Rockstar turned to be the highlight of the performance with Rahman belting out four songs one after the other from the film.

Many fans were desperate for yesteryear’s chartbusters but none of them featured in the show. “He could have sung hit classics that made him ‘AR Rahman’. I was disappointed because he sang less. I felt he is a brilliant musician but not a great live performer. The show was average,” said Nausheen Tareen, who attended the show on Saturday with her friends.

Another AR Rahman fan echoed similar sentiments, saying, “It was definitely moment of a lifetime to watch AR Rahman live. I was totally smitten by his energy and his voice. But I was expecting much more through this performance rather than just a courtesy to the stage. I am not fully satisfied,” said Megha Rai.

In the end, while Rahman thanked his fans for turning up in full numbers, his admirers kept chanting ‘once more’. Contrary to expectations, the musician faded away across backstage sharp at 10pm.
